Joseph H. Powell, AIA, LEED AP

Joseph Powell understands that the best architecture results from an intrinsic knowledge and reflection of each building’s purpose, time, and place. His genuine care and concern for his clients’ needs educes projects that become sources of owner and public pride.

Powell is a natural problem-solver who likes to understand how things are built. He enjoys programming and solving challenging 3D problems. Combined with his penchant for research, these strengths result in success on projects with difficult sites or accelerated schedules. His creativity shines in his detail-oriented architectural solutions and close collaboration with clients and user groups.

A founding partner of BKP in 1996, Powell imbued the firm with his thoughtful and thorough methodology and design excellence approach, for which his architectural projects have earned national recognition. Powell previously established Joseph Powell & Associates in 1991 when he won the Evanston Public Library international design competition. The completed project went on to win design accolades and solidify Powell’s expertise in library design. He maintains his leadership in the field through a portfolio of library work and frequent presentations and attendance at events including the New Jersey Library Association Conference and Summer Library Management Conference.

Powell holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Temple University and is a registered professional architect in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. In addition to his firm leadership, Powell is a member of the American Institute of Architects, American Library Association, National Trust for Historic Preservation, and National Council of Architectural Registration Boards. An industry leader, he has served on the AIA Philadelphia and AIA Pennsylvania boards and his alumni board. He is a past recipient of the Temple University Distinguished Alumni Award and the AIA Philadelphia Young Architect Award.
