Upper Merion Community Center & Senior Service Center
BKP’s design for the Upper Merion Community Center & Senior Service Center manipulates a sloped site and revitalizes an under-utilized, nondescript industrial building into a community asset with amenities for all ages. Organization of the dual program – indoor recreation center and senior activity center – maintains the distinct identity of each. Senior amenities are located adjacent to the entry lobby at the highest level of the building, separate, yet overlooking, recreation areas below. Extensive glass increases natural light and views, engaging all community members in all of the building’s activity. Configuration of a flexible gym – visible from nearly every room – accommodates three volleyball courts, three middle school basketball courts, or two regulation high school/college basketball courts, allowing tournament play for all levels. Multipurpose sport surface and a three-lane perimeter track enable the facility to host indoor soccer, field hockey, lacrosse, or track programs. Spinning and aerobics rooms and a fitness center complement art, cooking, and music studios. A welcoming front entry desk fits into the curve of a sweeping staircase, concentric with the entry lobby and vehicle drop-off.
