Upper Gwynedd Community Center
Following a study to understand community preferences, BKP developed a conceptual design for a new Upper Gwynedd Community Center to be located in the township’s municipal complex. The semi-wooded setting offered an opportunity to create a campus, with program areas extending from the interior to a series of stepped terraces that can be used for parties or events. A thoughtful landscape plan offers a constant connection between nature and the indoors while fostering sustainable site maintenance and storm water management. Architecture inspired by multi-generational recreation features a combination of metal panels, clear and opaque glass, and brick cladding with oversize letters that both brand the building and become nontraditional children’s play space. Flexible spaces enable the facility to host events of all sizes. A walking track overlooks a multipurpose volleyball-basketball court and a turf field. A large fitness room cantilevers over the main entrance, forming an entry porch. Offices, meeting rooms, restrooms, and lounge space are tucked into the efficient plan. Natural landscape features, stone walls, and Cor-Ten post fencing integrate building and site while subtly guiding and protecting pedestrians, especially children.
