Project Details

To support the university’s mission for inclusive student gathering spaces, BKP designed The LaB at Johns Hopkins University, a late-night, alcohol-free campus entertainment venue. The renovation accentuated existing features of a 50-year-old former restaurant building while adding technology such as a cashless pay system, flexible furnishings, and a warm, industrial-hip aesthetic. Exposed brick pairs with new graffiti-pattern tile and a dramatic LED-illuminated bubble wall. Comfortable lounge and café seating, work tables of varying sizes, and a portable stage can all be reconfigured for different events. Sliding doors divide a collaboration area into a private meeting room containing a custom table with integrated technology, blackboard, and video screen. Gathering space extends outdoors via two terrace seating areas and a new wood pergola marking the main entrance. The university coordinates diverse activities in the venue, from salsa dancing to SuperBowl parties, but primarily leaves the facility open to student-crafted experiences. The LaB meets students’ need for a crucial “third” space – one that blurs the boundaries between academics and socialization.
