Project Details

As part of the University of Pennsylvania’s mission to encourage wellness campus-wide, BKP designed a new home for consolidated health services. The 3535 Market Wellness Center includes the offices of Student Health Service, Counseling and Psychological Services, Alcohol and Other Drugs, Violence Prevention, and Campus Health (the outreach arm of Student Health Service). Programming takes a holistic approach to students’ physical, mental, and social health, while the design fosters collaboration and communication among the different offices charged with supporting wellness. The design capitalizes on the building’s large windows and minimizes the effects of low ceilings. Modular furniture allows flexibility while interior glass brightens the interiors. The design allows flexibility for the different groups to learn to work together and for students to use spaces in the evenings. It breaks down the perceived barrier of distance to campus (two blocks away) and reduces the stigma of visiting the health center. The dynamic facility offers forward-thinking, flexible, and engaging space to support holistic student health.
