Venice Island in AIA Context
published April 27, 2016
The spring 2016 edition of AIA Context magazine features a design profile of the Venice Island Transformation, highlighting the project’s focus on community engagement. The journal of AIA Philadelphia editorial staff asked the question Can good design help solve problems of equity and community development?and called upon architects to submit projects representing design in the public interest. BKP is proud that Venice Island was selected for inclusion.
Since opening in October 2014, the Venice Island Performing Arts and Recreation Center has become the centerpiece of a cultural renaissance in Philadelphia’s Manayunk neighborhood. Venice Island mitigated longstanding environmental issues and has been embraced by the community. The project was designed for and with local residents’ input.
